General FAQs for all members

Can I take photos of my gymnast?

In line with our safeguarding policy, we ask that you don’t take photos or videos of your gymnast in the gym.

Our Photography Policy sets out our approach to photography at the Club.

Can I wear jewellery to training?

Unfortunately not!  It can be dangerous for our coaches and our gymnasts for them to wear jewellery to train, and we require all jewellery to be removed before gymnasts enter the gym.  If younger gymnasts find it difficult to remove earrings, then please make sure you help them before they enter the gym so that they’re not lost.

The only exception to this is where children have recently had their ears pierced.  If this is the case, then they will be permitted to leave their earrings in, but they must have them fully covered with tape before they enter the gym and for their full session.  Coaches won’t be able to help with this.

Can my gymnast still attend their session if they are late?

If your gymnast arrives late for their session after the start time, we may not be able to allow them to join their session. If they are more than 5 minutes late, they will be refused access.

Do I need to join British Gymnastics?

All our members need to register with British Gymnastics.  Along with other benefits, this gives your gymnast important comprehensive insurance in case they get injured. This membership must be in place before your gymnasts 3rd session. Gymnasts with no membership by their 3rd session will be refused entry.

Individual membership will move to a annual rolling term to ensure members get the most out of their membership. The renewal date will be based on the 1st of the month. E.g. Member joins on 15th July 2024, their membership will be backdated to the 1st July 2024 and will expire 30th June 2025.

How do I register?

We’d love your child to join the Club and take part in gymnastics!  If you’re interested in joining us, then you can register online for a session using our administration software LoveAdmin.  The form will ask you to confirm which sessions you are interested in: we recommend you select all of the sessions that you can make as this will maximise your chances of getting into one – some of them are full.

Once you’ve registered, one of our team will be in touch to confirm if a place is available on one of the sessions you’ve requested.

How do we find the club? Where do I park?

The Club is based on Faverdale Industrial Estate.  The address is: Faverdale Industrial Estate, Faverdale, Darlington, DL3 0PP.  We’re just up the road from the Arriva bus depot, and behind 4Motion skate park.

When you arrive, there’s a large car park in front of 4Motion – please park there.  If that car park is full, then we kindly ask you to park on the street between us and the Arriva depot.  Please do not park in the big turning circle, or up the side of the building – our neighbours have lorries and coaches that they need to be able to move around.

My child has some disabilities. Can they do gymnastics?

DGC is an inclusive club and aims to allow all children the opportunity to take part in the sport. If you have any questions about your child taking part, please don’t hesitate to contact the club on admin@darlingtongymnastics.co.uk and we can discuss a solution that will meet the needs of your child.

We are going on holiday for two weeks. Can we have credit / refund for those weeks?

Unfortunately not. Fees are payable for the full month in advance and credits / refunds can’t be given in these circumstances.

Who do I speak to with a welfare concern?

If you are concerned about the welfare of your gymnast, any other gymnast or see behaviour that you are uncomfortable with, please alert a coach or contact our Welfare officers on welfare@darlingtongymnastics.co.uk

Details of DGC`s Welfare officer are also available on the board in the gym.

Alternatively, you could contact one of the Regional Welfare Officers:

FAQ for our Recreational and Pre-School gymnasts

Can I change my gymnast’s session?

If you need to change session, please contact the office on admin@darlingtongymnastics.co.uk and we will see what we can do. Some sessions do have waiting lists and limited capacity so there may be a wait before you can change sessions.

Please contact us to change your gymnast’s session at least a week before the end of the month  changes after this might not be possible until the following month, and we do not provide refunds in such circumstances.

Can my child join a competitive squad?

DGC runs a number of competitive squads. Coaching staff monitor all the children during their sessions and any child that shows potential is brought to the attention of the Senior team. Children may then be offered a trial in a squad. Further progression is individualised to the child and will be discussed at the time.

Can my gymnast come to a different session one week?

Our sessions are set up as classes, so we are unable to accommodate one-off or temporary changes.

Can my gymnast do more than one session?

Of Course! If your gymnast is already taking part in sessions and would like to do more, please email admin@darlingtongymnastics.co.uk and we will be able to organise an additional session.

Can my gymnast still attend their session if they are late?

If your gymnast arrives late for their session after the start time, we may not be able to allow them to join their session. If they are more than 5 minutes late, they will be refused access.

Do sessions run through the holidays?

Our recreational sessions run through the holidays – with breaks for Christmas and in the Summer, details of any breaks will be emailed to you.

Pre-school sessions don’t usually run during the holidays.

How old does my child have to be to start gymnastics?

Darlington Gymnastics Club runs preschool sessions that are open to children from the age of 2. Once a child is 4, and at full time school, they can attend one of our recreational sessions.

If you are interested in registering your child, please visit our administration page LoveAdmin.

My gymnast wants to stop attending their sessions. How do I go about this?

If your gymnast decides not to return to sessions, please let us know by emailing admin@darlingtongymnastics.co.uk. We welcome any feedback about how we can improve our services and activities.

We ask that you give us at least 7 days’ notice before the next months payment is due so that we can allocate the space to a child on our waiting list. Your gymnast will finish on their last session of the month.

If your payment has been processed your gymnast will finish at the end of the following month.

DGC is under no obligation to refund any sessions if cancelled part way through the month.

What do I need to bring to my first session?

Welcome to Darlington Gymnastics Club!  We hope you’re as excited to come as we are to see you.

On your first day, all you need to do is to wear sportswear – a t shirt and shorts is fine.  If you decide you love the sport (we’re sure you will!), then you’ll need to buy a leotard, but don’t worry for your first session.  Apart from that, all you need to bring is a water bottle.

We do ask that you take off any jewellery before your session – it helps to keep everyone safe.

And if you have long hair, please make sure it’s tied up – ideally in a bun – before you arrive.

When you arrive, please let the staff on the front desk know that you’re here and they’ll show you what to do and where to go.  If there’s nobody on the front desk, then please head to the small gate that separates the waiting area and the gym and one of our coaching team will help you.

How do competitions work?

The North of England Women’s Technical Committee (W.T.C) have produced the following guide to competitions.  This information is relevant for most of the competitions that we enter:

Registration

When gymnasts arrive at the competition venue, they report to the registration desk (usually next to the spectator entrance or the entrance to the competition area). All they need to do is confirm their name and club so that the organisers can check which gymnasts have arrived. The registration time quoted is the latest time for registration. Individual clubs have no influence over registration time. this is set by the W.T.C organisers.

The respective club’s coaches will usually be waiting at this area to collect the gymnasts. They won’t necessarily go straight into the competition area, as a previous round may still be underway, so you may have to wait outside the competition area for a while. If the coach is not available (they may still be involved in a previous round) the gymnast should wait with their parent/carer until the previous round has finished and a coach becomes available.

Once gymnasts have reported to their coaches they remain with their coaches until the competition has finished. They should not return to their parents/carers. It is very important gymnasts do not the competition area without receiving specific permission from the competition organisers.

General warm-up

All the gymnasts from all clubs involved in each competition round have a general warm-up on the floor for 10/15 minutes. Each club’s gymnasts are supervised by their own coaches.

March on and introduction

The usual format is for the gymnasts to be taken to a holding area after the general warm-up. They then march in and go to the judges for the piece of apparatus where they will be competing first. The coaches know which apparatus this will be. Whilst the judges are welcoming the gymnasts, the organisers will announce each gymnast individually. When their name is called, the gymnast should present to the crowd.

Compete

During a 4-piece competition, gymnasts will compete on (vault, bars, beam, floor). Each time the gymnasts move from one piece to another this is called a ‘Rotation’. There may also be a ‘Rest’ rotation, if there are too many gymnasts in a round to split between the 4 pieces of apparatus. The gymnasts always move round in the order: – vault, bars, beam, floor but they may start on any of these pieces of apparatus, for example, if they start on beam then they will compete beam, floor, vault, bars and so on.

Rest Group: In the event of a rest group, Gymnasts are not permitted to leave the competition area unless it is to use the bathroom. Also, they are not permitted to bring food onto the competition area other than a banana or cereal bar in their bag, if it is needed for medical reasons, please ensure you inform the competition organiser prior to the start of the competition

Before competing on each piece of apparatus (and in addition to the general warm-up) gymnasts warm up on each piece of apparatus before their actual competition performance.

When it comes to the competition performance each gymnast will perform one or two vaults (normally the best of the two scores counts) but only one routine on bars, beam and floor.

Each piece of apparatus has judges to give the gymnasts a score for their performance. Gymnasts must ‘Present’ to the judges both before and at the end of their routine on every piece. The head judge for each piece of apparatus will raises their arm when they are ready for the gymnast to present then start. Coaches (and judges) have a programme for the competition so know which gymnasts should be on which piece at each stage of the competition. Coaches also have numbers for their club’s gymnasts that they show to the judges before each gymnast performs so that the judge can record the score against the correct gymnast.

At the end of the round all the gymnasts in the competition will usually leave the competition area, again whilst the organisers check all the scores. The gymnast then march back onto the floor to wait for the presentations. These are methodically announced by level of competition and age group. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are given for places 1/2/3 and place ribbons for 4/5/6 on every piece of apparatus and for the overall winners (all 4 scores added together). This can take a while, but the gymnasts have worked hard to get to where they are, so they deserve their recognition.

General information

Gymnasts should arrive already wearing their leotard and tracksuit/leggings. They should also have their handguards/wristbands and some water/drink with them. Gymnasts should carry all this in their Gymnastics bag.

There will usually be more than one ‘Round’ in each competition held during the day/weekend. Normally (but not always) all gymnasts from all clubs in a particular level/age category, will be in the same round unless there are too many to do so.

This is why our gymnasts do not all have to be at the competition venue at the same time or even on the same day.

Spectators are allowed to take photographs/videos but only of their own gymnast(s) There must NOT BE ANY flash photography.

There is an individual gymnast and team entry fee for all W.T.C. competitions

There will also be a spectator admission fee for all competitions. All venues have a spectator seating are and provide some refreshments.

Spectators

Spectating parents. gymnasts and coaches are expected to behave in a professional manner and must not attempt to coach from side lines or distract the participating gymnasts in any way. They should also not shout at any coaches, judges or competition officials. The W.T.C. request your cooperation on this matter. In the event of this taking place the offenders may be asked to leave the arena.

If you have any questions, we politely request you wait until the end of the competition or back in your own gym and speak to your respective club coaches.
